Veterinary Course

Bachelor of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry (BVSc. & AH)

                                Medical Science that deals with the treatment of diseases and care for animals and birds are called Veterinary Science. Those who take this degree and practice are called as veterinary doctors. Veterinary science also involves the handling of scientific breeding of livestock.Bachelor of veterinary science and animal husbandry (B.V.Sc. and AH) is a five-year  undergraduate level course. After completing the course and internship, students become eligible to become veterinary doctors.Their study areas include animal husbandry, animal breeding, animal research to control the spread of diseases, wildlife conservation, poultry management and health care, livestock management and so on. On completion of the B.V.Sc and AH, most of the learners go on to pursue the post-graduate program, i.e, Master in Veterinary Science(M.V.Sc) .    
       Graduates in veterinary science and animal husbandry can join animal husbandry department as veterinary doctors/ officers after registering their names with the Kerala Veterinary Council. They can also get jobs in the poultry industry and animal farms; research and development wings of pharmaceutical companies. There are also opportunities for veterinary doctors in the armed forces. Veterinarians are employed by zoos and wildlife sanctuaries. Meritorious postgraduates in veterinary science can also opt for teaching or research work. Pharmaceutical companies and dairy sector industries also employ veterinary science graduates. Veterinary doctors are required for extension programs as Extension Officers at the block level, i.e., they educate and encourage livestock farmers to build up the quality of animal stock. They also advise on animal farm management and animal health problems. The dairy industry employs a large number of veterinary doctors who work for increased yields in milk production and the health and breeding of dairy cattle.Veterinarians work in poultry farms to maintain the health of poultry birds.Veterinary doctors have job opportunities in India as well as abroad.
