Economics,
which has been perceived as a traditional social science for decades has
emerged as a new gateway for corporate careers in recent years. Growth in
sectors such as finance, banking, insurance and allied sectors created demand
for graduates in economics on a great scale.
Job
prospects:-
Well-trained
students of economics can take up job in fields such as finance, banking, development
sector, public policy, social work, journalism, teaching and research.
Positions are available both in public and private sectors. Globalisation and
the consequent merging of the world economy have widened the career prospects
for economics students - business, education, government and consultancy are
some of the fields in which they are in demand. A graduate or a postgraduate in
economics can find entry-level jobs in banking, finance, insurance, stock
markets, sales and marketing and so on. Government enterprises, public sector
companies, investment firms, business journals and newspapers are other
prospective employers. The Indian Economics Service (IES) and positions in the
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) are excellent options in the government sector. The
Union Public Service Commission conducts the IES examination every year.
Economics graduates in the 21-30 age group may apply. Students can go for an
MBA course at top-level institutions or choose journalism, law and so on for
higher studies. The private sector holds out much growth potential for
economists.
Psychology
To become a psychologist or counselor, one should preferably do a PhD.
in psychology. At the Masters-level, students can specialize in subjects such
as clinical psychology, counseling psychology, educational psychology and
development psychology .After completing Plus Two, you should choose psychology
for the degree course. Several universities and colleges offer three-year
degree courses in psychology .In Kerala, the many colleges offer psychology at
the degree level. Plus two students with any combination of subjects can apply.
Admission will be made on the basis of merit in the qualifying examinations.
Job prospects :-
To
pursue the career of a psychologist, one should have a genuine desire to help
other people resolve their mental or emotional problems. Clinical psychologists
can find jobs in mental health hospitals and clinics and do private practice as
consultant psychologists or counselors. Teaching and research are two avenues
of employment for qualified psychologists. They can also work as counselors in
schools and colleges to help students when they
face various challenges in their studies as well as in life.
